What is Feminism?

Feminism. I never really considered myself to be a feminist. To be honest, I always kind of thought of it as a dirty word.

It's only recently that I've realized that feminism isn't supposed to be a negative thing. However, there are many stereotypes and even some individuals that portray it as such.

So here is what I believe feminism should be, and what it should not.

Feminism should be about empowering women.
Feminism should not be about belittling men.

Feminism should be about promoting positive body image.
Feminism should not favor choosing to show more skin over choosing to show less skin.

Feminism should teach both men and women to respect women's bodies.
Feminism should not generalize all men as pigs.

Feminism should focus on the big picture of equality.
Feminism should not spend all its time fretting over the small stuff.

Feminism should produce role models for young women.
Feminism should not neglect the fact that young men need role models too.

Feminism should strive for an equal chance at success for both men and women.
Feminism should not look to flip the scales in favor of women over men.

Feminism should promote the happiness of all women.
Feminism should not judge a woman based on what makes her happy.

Feminism should be a positive and empowering thing.
Feminism should not be a negative and belittling thing.

Women have every right to feel empowered and strive for greatness. However, the way to do that is not by trying to drag men or other women down. If we drag others down on our attempt to rise, can we really rise at all? The only way to rise is to do it together. By working together, that is how women, and men, can truly achieve greatness.
