2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 19 & 20

Image
You can see the prompt list in my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post or on the popsugar.com website. Here are my thoughts on the 19th and 20th books that I've read this year. Book 19:  Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts.  by Bren é   Brown I gave this book 2/5 stars on Goodreads. The prompt I chose for this was "A Book by an author whose first and last names start with the same letter"  I'd heard amazing things about this book, and so when my sorority decided to read it for their book club I was excited to join in. The wait to get this book from the library was well over a month, and I took that as a good sign too that it was well loved and going to be a great book. Unfortunately, for me that was not the case. I love the occasional self-help or leadership book. When we find a good one, my boss and I recommend them to each other. I was hoping to be able to recommend this one to him, but sadly I found...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 17 & 18

I'm really enjoying working my way through the 2019 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge prompts this year. The prompts are helping me broaden my horizons and read more books that I might not have picked in the past. I'm really enjoying reading new books and authors, and I can't wait to see how the rest of the year goes. You can see the prompt list in my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post or on the popsugar.com website. Here are my thoughts on the 17th and 18th books that I've read this year. Book 17: P.S. I still love you  by Jenny Han I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads. The prompt I chose for this was "Read a book during the season it is set in" I wasn't originally going to use this book for that prompt, but after reading it and realizing that the season at the time fit really well it felt like it was meant to be. This book was cute, but it didn't resonate with me the same way the first in the series did. WARNI...

Book Review: Magic Diary by Pat LaMarche

Image
Thank you Sunbury Press, Inc. for giving me an advanced copy of this book to review. Genevieve is a teenage girl who has a relapse in her battle with cancer when her teacher gives her a magic diary. The magic diary is supposed to help Genevieve keep track of her thoughts and feelings and speed up the passage of time during her treatment. However, the unexpected happens; entries start appearing from historical figures as messages to Genevieve to help her understand all of the challenges she is facing. There were a lot of things that I loved about this book. First, I love that it is about keeping a journal or diary as a coping mechanism during difficult times. This is something I found very useful when I was Genevieve's age, though for different life events. I also loved how the book introduced readers to different historical figures. There were also some things I both liked, and felt conflicted over. I enjoyed that some entries tied into modern events, but some transition...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 15 & 16

As I'm looking through the books I've read so far this year, and writing these posts, I'm realizing what my mother has been telling me all these years might just be true: I really do read a lot. That said, there are never enough books, and I wish I could keep up with reading even more. Here are my thoughts on the 15th and 16th books that I've read this year for the 2019 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge (you can see the prompt list in my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post or on the popsugar.com website). Book 15:  The Immortalists  by Chloe Benjamin I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads, but I would've given it 3.5 if half stars were available. The prompt I chose for this was "A book with a plant on the cover or in the title." I picked this up for my sorority's national book club, and although a lot of prompts could have fit it, this prompt just kind of smacked me in the face the moment I saw the cover. Warning: ...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 13 & 14

This year, I'm participating in  the 2019 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge. ( For more information check out my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post, or look up the challenge on popsugar.com.)  Here are my thoughts on the 13th and 14th books that I read. Book 13:  Eat Pray Love  by Elizabeth Gilbert I gave this book 4/5 stars on Goodreads. The prompt I chose for this was "A Book With at least 1 million ratings on Goodreads."  This book was an incredibly easy read in my opinion. I felt like her writing style flowed well, and it kept me interested enough to keep reading for the most part. There were some areas where I wanted to skip ahead, but overall, I felt it had a good flow. However, there were some things that rubbed me the wrong way a bit. Disclaimer: slight spoilers ahead.   Particularly, her view on her mental state, and how she did not want to continue taking her medication threw me off. Although I hope it...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 11 & 12

This year, I'm participating in  the 2019 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge. ( For more information check out my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post, or look up the challenge on popsugar.com.)  Here are my thoughts on the 11th and 12th books that I read. Book 11: Gemini  by Carol Cassella I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads, but I think it really deserved 2.5 stars if half stars were an option on the app. The prompt I chose for this was "A Book With a Zodiac Sign or Astrology Term in the Title."  I struggled with getting invested in this book. The changing point of views, and the slow build to where everything came together took far too long in my opinion. By the time it did start to come together and make sense, I began to really love and understand the characters. It was just a difficult read for me to get to that point. There were a lot of moving pieces as a doctor tries to save a woman, Jane Doe, as well as...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 9 & 10

For 2019, I've decided to participate in  the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge. ( For more information check out my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post, or look up the challenge on popsugar.com.)  Here are my thoughts on the 9th and 10th books that I read. Book 9:  A Christmas Carol  by Charles Dickens I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads, but I think it really deserved 3.5 stars if half stars were an option on the app. The prompt I chose for this was "A Book that has inspired a common phrase or idiom."  I can't believe that it took me this long to finally read such a classic book. To be honest, I'm a little bit disappointed in myself. It wasn't a long book, and I've seen so many different movie versions, but just had never picked up a copy of the book to read. Being that it was a classic, there were definitely parts where the writing was a little bit hard to get through, but once I got into it, there wer...
