2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 11 & 12

Image
This year, I'm participating in  the 2019 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge. ( For more information check out my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post, or look up the challenge on popsugar.com.)  Here are my thoughts on the 11th and 12th books that I read. Book 11: Gemini  by Carol Cassella I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads, but I think it really deserved 2.5 stars if half stars were an option on the app. The prompt I chose for this was "A Book With a Zodiac Sign or Astrology Term in the Title."  I struggled with getting invested in this book. The changing point of views, and the slow build to where everything came together took far too long in my opinion. By the time it did start to come together and make sense, I began to really love and understand the characters. It was just a difficult read for me to get to that point. There were a lot of moving pieces as a doctor tries to save a woman, Jane Doe, as well as...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 9 & 10

For 2019, I've decided to participate in  the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge. ( For more information check out my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post, or look up the challenge on popsugar.com.)  Here are my thoughts on the 9th and 10th books that I read. Book 9:  A Christmas Carol  by Charles Dickens I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads, but I think it really deserved 3.5 stars if half stars were an option on the app. The prompt I chose for this was "A Book that has inspired a common phrase or idiom."  I can't believe that it took me this long to finally read such a classic book. To be honest, I'm a little bit disappointed in myself. It wasn't a long book, and I've seen so many different movie versions, but just had never picked up a copy of the book to read. Being that it was a classic, there were definitely parts where the writing was a little bit hard to get through, but once I got into it, there wer...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 7 & 8

This year, I'm participating in  the 2019 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge. ( For more information check out my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post, or look up the challenge on popsugar.com.)  Here are my thoughts on the 7th and 8th books that I read. Book 7:  Goosebumps: The Barking Ghost  by R.L. Stine I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads. The prompt I chose for this was "A Ghost Story."  I loved the Goosebumps books as a kid (even if they scared me a bit) so when I saw the ghost story prompt, I knew the book I chose would have to be Goosebumps. As I was reading this book, I couldn't help but think that I probably did read it as a kid, and as a kid it probably terrified me. However, I didn't remember how it ended, and so I was still excited to finish it. This book, being that it was written for kids, was a very quick book for me to read (possibly only a few hours; definitely no more than a day). The plot was ...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 5 & 6

Image
Here are my thoughts on the 5th and 6th books that I read for the 2019 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge. For more information check out my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post, or look up the challenge on popsugar.com. Book 5:  Nancy Drew and The Secret of the Forgotten City  by Carolyn Keene I gave this book 2/5 stars on Goodreads. The prompt I chose for this was "A Book Featuring an Amateur Detective."  I really loved Nancy Drew growing up, and thought that this was the perfect prompt to revisit one of the old Nancy Drew books that I hadn't read. I chose this one, because I majored in Anthropology in college and thought it would be a fun way to tie Nancy Drew into something more recent in my life.  Unfortunately, I was so disappointed in this book. (Disclaimer: I'm sorry if there's some minor spoilers in my description of why.)  First, the anthropology major in me has serious issues with how the artifacts were mistreat...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Books 3 & 4

Image
This year I'm participating in the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge for 2019 (you can see the prompt list in my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post or on the popsugar.com website). Here are my thoughts on the 3rd and 4th books that I've read this year. Book 3:  Norse Mythology  by Neil Gaiman I gave this book 5/5 stars on Goodreads. The prompt I chose for this was "A Retelling of a Classic." I actually had a different book in mind for this prompt, but then someone pointed out to me that myths and legends are as classical as books get, and so I'll save that other book for another prompt. I've learned that I really, really love Norse Mythology. These stories and their retelling in this book are amazing. There were definitely a few that I tried to verbally put my own spin on to my boyfriend. I'm pretty sure he hasn't seen me be so excited about a book that I had to interrupt whatever he was trying to do at ...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Book 2

Image
I recently decided to follow the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge for 2019 (you can see the prompt list in my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post or on the popsugar.com website), and wanted to give some thoughts on the books that I'm reading for it this year. Some of these books will be outside of my comfort zone, and some will be books I would've read with or without the challenge. So without further ado, here are my thoughts on the 2nd book that I've read this year. Book 2: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald The Original Screenplay  by JK Rowling I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads. The prompt I chose for this was "A book that makes you feel nostalgic." I grew up on the Harry Potter books and movies, and I love that there's new books and movies still coming out from the Harry Potter universe. Granted, I don't get dressed up as Luna anymore to go to the midnight releases, but it does make me remember the days that I did. I...

2019 Reading Challenge Reviews - Book 1

Image
I recently shared that I'm participating in the 2019 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge this year. I'm super excited to read books in more genres and styles, and from authors I wouldn't normally have picked out for myself (as well as some of my more traditional choices). I'll be sharing my thoughts on the books I read throughout the year, and what prompt I read them for. (For a list of the prompts, please see my 2019 Reading Challenge Overview post, or check out the list on popsugar.com) Here are my thoughts on the first book that I read in 2019: Book 1: The Brotherband Chronicles: Slaves of Socorro by John Flanagan I gave this book 3/5 stars on goodreads. I had been reading the  Brotherband Chronicles  series in 2018. I really wanted to read this book since it was the next one in the series, but needed to find a prompt that fit it. Thank you prompt, "Your favorite prompt from a prior year". There were so many prompts from 2018 that fit this book, and ...

This year, in order to broaden my reading horizons, I've decided to take part in the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge for 2019. Over the course of this year, I'll share what books I've been reading for the challenge, and what my thoughts are for each of the books. Below, I've included images of all of the prompts from the Pop Sugar website for anyone that is interested in joining the challenge!
